Gigacasting and Gigapress – The Future of Vehicle Manufacturing?

The chassis die-casting market will grow to 2.6 billion dollars by 2030. With costs of between six and twenty million euros per gigapress and dominant Asian suppliers, the technology is reforming the automotive sector - especially the electric vehicle sector. The global market for the integration of die-cast chassis in electric vehicles shows great potential for growth. The market is currently estimated at 751 million dollars and is expected to grow to 2.6 billion dollars by 2030. At the same time, the aluminium die casting market is expected to grow from just under 73 billion dollars to 126 billion dollars by 2032.

The current market overview makes it clear that there is significant demand for gigacasting technology within the automotive industry. This trend will continue, particularly due to cost savings and the global increase in the production of electric vehicles.

The primary challenge for OEMs is to weigh up the high initial investment against the long-term benefits of effectively utilising this technology.

Costs for Gigapress in China

In China, the costs for Gigapress vary considerably between 6 and 20 million euros. Added to this are the costs for the necessary peripheral equipment for die casting and logistics costs. Tooling costs are also a significant cost factor, as Gigacastings rely on alloys such as AlSi7CuMg for Tesla or AlSi7MnMg for OEMs such as Volkswagen or Volvo.

Facts, facts, facts

An annual production of around 120,000 parts is assumed for OEM Gigapress. This figure varies depending on the thickness and shape of the components. The production time for each part is around two minutes. Example: A vehicle manufacturer that wants to produce 500,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) per year with a rear part would need four to five Gigapress systems. For front parts, the number of machines would even have to be doubled.

Asia dominates the market

The market is currently dominated by Asian suppliers. The leading companies include Bühler (Switzerland), Chongqing Daijang Millison Die Casting (China), Guangdong Hongtu Technology (China), Haitian Die Casting (China) and IDRA (Italy), which was acquired by L.K. Holdings (China). IDRA has already sold 25 presses, of which 21 have been produced and delivered, including to leading Tier 1 suppliers. Other suppliers are ItalPresseGauss (Italy), Shibaura Machine (Japan), Ube Machinery Corporation (Japan) and Yizumi (China).
