Aluminium procurement: from an operational task to a strategic competitive factor

Aluminium is indispensable for die casters, yet procuring it is becoming increasingly challenging. Geopolitical risks, volatile prices and growing competition for high-quality recycled material are putting European supply chains under increasing pressure. At the same time, requirements regarding carbon footprints and proof of origin are becoming more stringent. In an interview with EUROGUSS 365, Sven-Steffen Schulz, Head of Market Research at the Association for Supply Chain Management, Procurement and Logistics (BME), and Pierina Miladinovic, Senior Analyst at BME Market Research, explain the developments shaping the market and how foundries can make their supply chains more resilient, cost-effective and sustainable.

Which developments are currently having the greatest impact on the availability and price of aluminium?

Sven-Steffen Schulz: The aluminium market is currently being influenced primarily by three factors: geopolitical risks, high energy costs and persistently robust demand from growth sectors such as electric mobility, renewable energy and lightweight construction. At the same time, production restrictions in major producer countries, such as Mozambique, together with declining inventories, are making the market highly sensitive to disruptions. Even relatively minor production or transport outages can result in significant price fluctuations.

For the manufacturing industry, this means that aluminium is likely to remain a comparatively volatile procurement market in the years ahead. Alongside the LME price, regional premiums, transport costs and scrap availability are becoming increasingly important factors in the actual cost of procurement.

What risks will European die-casting foundries face when procuring aluminium over the coming years?

Pierina Miladinovic: Die-casting foundries must prepare for increasing uncertainty in their supply chains. European primary aluminium production is declining, while dependence on imports is growing. At the same time, geopolitical tensions, potential trade restrictions and regulatory intervention are increasing the risk of supply shortages. In addition, competition for high-quality recycled materials is intensifying; for many companies, these materials will become a key source of raw materials.

The challenge, therefore, is not merely to procure sufficient aluminium; ensuring the required quality and sustainability will be equally crucial in future.

How is rising demand for secondary aluminium changing the procurement market?

Sven-Steffen Schulz: Since recycled aluminium requires considerably less energy and has a substantially lower carbon footprint than primary aluminium, its importance is steadily increasing across many industries. At the same time, however, this is intensifying competition for high-quality scrap and recycled grades. For foundries, securing access to quality-assured secondary materials is therefore increasingly becoming a strategic objective. In summary, the metal price will not be the only decisive factor in future; the availability of suitable recycling streams will be equally important.

What role will carbon footprint, proof of origin and regulatory requirements play in supplier selection?

Pierina Miladinovic: These three factors are increasingly becoming integral parts of supplier selection. Customers are demanding greater transparency about where materials come from and the emissions generated during their production. At the same time, new regulations such as the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism CBAM are increasing documentation and verification requirements.

For aluminium suppliers, it is therefore becoming ever more important to provide reliable information on emissions, recycled content and material origin. Sustainability is thus increasingly becoming a significant economic and strategic competitive factor.

What specific measures would you recommend to medium-sized foundries in particular to make their supply more resilient while remaining economically viable?

Sven-Steffen Schulz: Medium-sized foundries should take a more strategic approach to aluminium procurement today than they have in the past. The key is to reduce dependence on individual suppliers or sourcing regions and broaden the supplier base. At the same time, long-term partnerships are becoming more important in order to ensure reliable supply even during tight market conditions.

In addition, the use of secondary aluminium should be expanded wherever technically feasible. Recycled material not only significantly reduces the carbon footprint but can also improve security of supply. Companies should also seek to limit price risks through suitable contract models and forward-looking procurement planning.

Conclusion: Companies that consider security of supply, cost control and sustainability together will be significantly more resilient in future. Aluminium procurement is therefore increasingly evolving from an operational task into a strategic competitive factor.
