Lean construction as a success factor
From the initial feasibility study to commissioning, the entire construction process was accompanied by lean methods. An interdisciplinary lean team of BMW Group employees and external partners managed the construction and used digital applications and 3D models (BIM models) to ensure maximum transparency during the construction phases. More than 30 individual areas were made available for production, whereby a high level of responsiveness was achieved through close integration with the technology department.
‘The key to success is collaboration’
Dr Nicole Haft-Zboril, Head of BMW Group Real Estate Management, emphasises the importance of lean construction: ‘The consistency with which the lean method has been applied here across all trades has been outstandingly successful. Lean is our answer to competitively shaping structural change in terms of time, costs and quality.’ She particularly emphasises the transparent project management and close cooperation with internal and external partners as key success factors.
Thomas Thym, Head of BMW Group Plant Landshut, adds: ‘The expansion of the foundry is a fundamental milestone for us. A state-of-the-art production area with attractive working conditions has been created at record speed.’ The new building represents a significant expansion of production capacity and enables the production of housings for the sixth generation of electric drive units.
Investment in electromobility
With the commissioning of the new foundry building, the plant is completing an investment of around 200 million euros. Since 2020, the BMW Group has invested a total of around one billion euros in the Landshut site, including 500 million euros for the expansion of electromobility alone. The plant is thus making a decisive contribution to the company's transformation towards electromobility.The BMW Group is regarded as a pioneer in the use of lean construction, both nationally and internationally. The principle has been integrated into construction processes for over a decade. Every year, the company invests heavily in training its employees and partners in order to continuously improve the efficiency and quality of its construction projects.
