ZMT Automotive GmbH & Co. KG was founded on 1 January 2003 under the name ZBG Motorentechnik GmbH & Co. KG. The company was established in response to a major order from BMW for the Franz Schabmüller Group, which required the mechanical machining of large-series parts using special-purpose machines and intelligently linked standard machines. The Franz Schabmüller Group seized this opportunity to expand its expertise and founded ZMT Automotive GmbH & Co.
