Global Challenges of Magnesium as light weight material in Transport Applications & Status Quo of the ...
... EC Working Group on Magnesium establishing 15% of European primary consumption being produced in Europe
The primary magnesium and refining industry are facing various challenges together with other high energy consuming industries on their way to a reduced and finally carbon free existence. A recent supply crisis and interruption on the global magnesium market has also added a geo-political dimension. New and alternative transport applications have shifted the importance of light weighing in general, and magnesium as the lightest structural metal has gained advantages (in e.g.: electrical vehicles), but also found some challenges (e.g.: in the efficiency of the powertrain). The lecture will provide a global view on the magnesium supply situation, and its pathway to a lower carbon production landscape, and will also display some case studies of Magnesium in various vehicle applications.
On 31 January and 1 February 2022, the French Presidency of the Council held a meeting of the EU ministers responsible for industry and the internal market to discuss strengthening European strategic autonomy. The Commission highlighted the actions taken since summer 2020 regarding raw materials, including the publication of an Action Plan on Raw Materials and the establishment of ERMA. Moreover, the Commission recently launched a high-level working group on magnesium, with the goal of ensuring 15% of the European production takes place in Europe by 2030.
