In lightweight construction, pioneering hybrid construction methods made of fiber composites and lightweight metals are increasingly being used, which combine the advantages of both material groups in the hybrid material. The combination of die-cast alloys and fiber materials or wires opens up new potential for components in lightweight construction, as they increasingly are required for applications in a wide variety of industries – in particular, automotive and aerospace. So far, however, there is no procedure that allows non-destructive monitoring of such hybrid components – which in turn is a prerequisite for industrial implementation. As part of the "HyQuality - Hybrid Casting Production with Standardized Quality Assurance" project, the Fraunhofer Institutes IIS / EZRT, IZFP and IFAM are contributing their respective expertise in order to jointly develop corresponding methods for this task. The aim is to develop a production-integrated monitoring process that makes it possible to visualize all types of defects in hybrid components and at the same time to continuously optimize the production process so that further defects can be avoided.
